wanderingsalsero's curator insight, November 2, 2016 4:57 AM
This is interesting because it shows how far the concept of 'Curation' has come in the last 10 years. I don't remember much about it but I remember that in the early days of Blogger, perhaps even before Google bought it, they had a tool or bookmarklet or some little button that had certain curation abilities. My first blog was on Blogger and I remember using that tool.

Later, I maintained a Posterous blog for a couple of years...maybe more. I liked Posterous a lot and was very sad when they sold it (Posterous) to Yahoo and then about a year later those jerks at Yahoo closed it down. I thought Posterous was a very nice blog with just the right amount of features to get the job done without getting too technical.

Felix Grobe's curator insight, June 9, 2018 10:43 AM

Google has just introduced "Collections", for Google+, a new service which allows any Google+ user to group his posts by topic and to create public, shareable collections of his favorite links, articles, videos and images.

To use Google Collections, simply go to your G+ profile page and then select "Collections" on the drop down menu appearing on the top left part of the page.

"Each collection can be shared publicly, privately, or with a custom set of people. Once you create your first collection, your profile will display a new tab where other people can find and follow your collections."

You can either create new posts containing whatever type of content inside a collection, or assign an existing, published post to a collection you have just created.

You can create as many collections as you like.

Google+ Collections is available on the web and on Android (iOS coming later).

My comment: Google+ Collections adds opportunity for creating additional value to G+ users by letting interests drive community engagement. This is a feature that sooner or later any social network will offer.

Free to use.

Curate and Syndicate Your Own Custom Mobile TV Channel App with iLook.TV

Curate and Syndicate Your Own Custom Mobile TV Channel App with iLook.TV | Latest Social Media News | Scoop.it

"iLook.TV crowdsources TV channels, TV programs and TV commercials."

Via Robin Good
Robin Good's curator insight, January 26, 2014 5:29 AM

iLook.TV lets you curate custom TV channels distributable via smartphone compatible apps that act as pay-TV like subscription channels.

The channels are commercial and can include or accept advertising requests thus providing a monetization opportunity for channel curators.

iLook.TV is made up of two components:

1) iLook.TV website where you create your channels

2) iLook.TV ChannelApp for ditributing your custom channel

In a Channel you can add / syndicate video clips and submit TV commercials to the iLook.TV system.

The ChannelApp is instead a mobile app that can be fully utilized by Channel subscribers as Program Guide for your channel as well as a TV remote to watch specific video content on their connected large TV screens. The ChannelApp can be branded, configured and submitted to the Apple App Store.

ILOOKTV supports three methods of monetization: subscription, pay-per-view, and TV commercials.

Soecifically:

  • A Channel subscription must be purchased by a TV viewer to play videos that are marked premium.

  • Pay-per-view (PPV) videos are marked with “Buy” (forever) or “Rent” (for 24-hours) and require a payment from a TV viewer.

  • TV commercials are submitted to the ILOOKTV system by advertisers and are automatically played on Channels that request them.  Advertisers are automatically charged for each insertion via instant auctions.

.

Revenues are collected by iLook.TV from subscriptions, PPV and commercials and are automatically shared with Channel owners.

.

The cost to own a Channel is $100 per year.

N.B.: Channel owners also need to pay the standard $100 Apple Developer fee when they submit the ChannelApp to the Apple App Store.

.

Promising concept. Rough implementation.
A glimpse at what the future of video curated content may look like in the near future.

Robin Good's curator insight, November 17, 2013 1:18 PM

Here is a great example of how the spontaneous content curation efforts by individual users of a marketplace can provide significant benefits both to the marketplace sellers as well to all buyers.

On ThemeForest, which is one of the largest and best catalogues of web site themes and designs, you can find an endless number of curated collections of templates, image sets, presentation decks and others resources (like video footage or soundtracks) for publishing quality content on the web. In fact, there are so many of them that the main problem for whoever goes to shop there, is the time needed to search and find what may best fit his needs.

But thanks to a community feature called "collections", any registered user can collect and organize individual themes found on ThemeForest into individual collections which can be shared with everyone publicly (or kept private).

Here some great examples:

The ensuing benefit for the users of the marketplace is the ability to find more rapidly valuable items within the ocean of options available.

As a consequence also whoever runs Themeforest benefits from more sales and less time spent by new buyers in finding what they are looking for.

But there's more.

Since ThemeForest is part of a larger network of design resources that includes video assets (VideoHive), graphic resources (Graphic River), design apps (CodeCanyon) and several others, the collections can and do often include assets coming from the other sites of the network facilitating serendpitous discovery for buyers of other useful products.

Finally, individual merchants selling on the Envato network can curate their own collections showcasing their best work according to specific uses and applications.

A great example of how curation can significantly help online sales in situations where there is a very large number of products or services on sale.

Import, Filter, Visualise And Publish Any Spreadsheet Online: Silk

Via Robin Good
Robin Good's curator insight, May 8, 2015 5:03 AM

Silk is a web tool to publish online spreadsheet-based data on a specific topic.

The service, which just released a new version of its offering, allows to easily convert any existing data-set into professional-looking data displays, charts, grids, and lists that can be embedded on any site and which can be viewed in multiple ways.

The value of Silk is specifically in making it easy and immediate for anyone to elegantly display and publish data sets in one of several alternative formats which include:

  • Table
  • List
  • Grid
  • Mosaic
  • Groups
  • Bars
  • Map
  • Donut
  • Line
  • Pie
  • Scatter
  • Stacks

How it works: Import a table from Excel, Google Sheets or any .csv file, select the fields you want to import and Silk does the rest offering you tools to filter, edit and select your preferred visualization approach.

You can also create data sets and displays from scratch inside Silk, and set each Silk either as public or private.

Why it is relevant for content curators: Silk provides a unique and powerful opportunity to leverage existing data and information assets, spreadsheets and databases and to convert them into highly legible and visually impactful data displays on a very specific topic.

My evaluation: Paired with the power of Kimonolabs or Import.io to convert any website or page content into a spreadsheet, it offers great potential in creating value by providing multiple professional formats to display, present and interact with such data.
Great tool for curating data-based information assets.

Free forever for public Silks of up to 3000 pages.

Capture, Edit, Collect and Organize Images and Full Web Pages with Ember (Mac)

Capture, Edit, Collect and Organize Images and Full Web Pages with Ember (Mac) | Latest Social Media News | Scoop.it
Collect the things you love, with Ember. Whether you’re capturing photos, screenshots or any other kind of image - save, annotate and sync it with Ember.

Via Robin Good
Robin Good's curator insight, March 5, 2014 1:30 PM

Ember is a Mac and iOS app that allows you to easily capture parts of a screen, a specific image, a whole window or a full web page easily and to edit it, collect it and organize it according to tags, themes/groups and colours.

Ember key strengths are:

a) the image "capture" toolset, which is second to none. It offers maximum flexibility, it is simple, and allows you to save directly to any folder/group/collection you have set-up.

b) the image editor utility that integrates a set of useful tools that includes cropper, focus/blur areas, rotate, add text, freehand drawing.

c) the elegantly designed "library" where you can organize your images and screenshots easily via drag and drop into collections. Each image can also have a description and multiple tags. In addition Ember can automatically sort all your images by colors.

d) the "subscription" area where you subscribe to image feeds from various sites and galleries to get inspiration and ideas.

iCloud-syncable.

Ember is a beautifully designed app that does a fantastic job of capturing any kind of image or screenshot from the web and to give you relevant tools to edit it and "curate" it into private collections.

N.B.: Though Ember is really a great app to use, I would not pay its relatively hefty price tag, unless it allowed me to publish or export (in a publishable format) some of my collections.

Free to 14-day trial.

Price £.34.99

N.B.: Ember requires Mac OSX Mavericks to run.

Robin Good's insight:

Here's a valuable resource on content curation, "distilled" by the students of the DCurate MOOC lead Martin Couzins and Sam Burrough which organizes over 60 different articles, guides and tools on the topic.

This resources collection is presented in the form of a Pearltrees interactive map, organized into eight sections:

1. Why Do We Need Curators

2. What Is Digital Curation

3. Aggregation vs. Curation

4. It's All About Audience

5. How Do We Find Valuable Content

6. How Do You Decide What To Curate

7. Curation Tools

8. Contributions from participants

If you are new to content curation this is a good resource to bookmark and keep as a reference.

Curate Your Own Wiki-Guide with the Wikipedia Book Create Tool

Help:Books - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

There are almost no limits when creating books from Wikipedia content. A good book focuses on a certain topic and covers it as well as possible. A meaningful title helps other users to have the correct expectation regarding the content of a book.

It's worth keeping in mind that some 'publishers' try to sell books based entirely on Wikipedia content.

Great Content Curators See Patterns Others Don't So Curation Is Highly Disruptive

Great Content Curators See Patterns Others Don't So Curation Is Highly Disruptive | Latest Social Media News | Scoop.it
What Is Content Curation Curation is an active filtering of the web’s infinite content and it may be the most disruptive Internet marketing tactic. Curators do more than simply assign meta value via categorization.

Disruptive & Exploding Content Curation
Wish I could tell you I plan to write sentences that will resonate and define something like content curation in a helpful way. The plan is to LOVE what I do and want to share it as often and as many ways as possible almost everything after that is accident (lol).

Content curation is about to explode. It has too, as Scoop.it's CEO Guillaume noted a good argument could be made that all content that ever needs to be created already has. This means the shift is to the curators.

I read something attributed to uber-curator Maria Popova. She supposedly said each time an Internet marketer uses the word "curator" real curators kill a kitten. Popova was being dramatic, but I take her point.

Our "curation" is digital curation - the active filtering, theming and organizing of a monster fire hose of content pointed at all of us. Our ability to read and make sense of the world may mean we are all "curators". A contemporary life requires curation.

Wish I could plan my day to create another piece of content as well received and helpful as this Curatti.com post, but it doesn't work that way. Better to focus on digging the ditch that needs digging than worrying too much about "viral marketing" or "legacy" content (is my thinking :). M

The Future of Search May Not Be About Google: It's You In The End Who Will Decide

The Future of Search May Not Be About Google: It's You In The End Who Will Decide | Latest Social Media News | Scoop.it
There is a evil side of Google which revealed itself in the Filter Bubble, invasion of privacy, the lack of transparency, in the monopoly induction of behavior and especially in what is happening in the search environment.

"we should worry about search engines becoming the arbiters of truth." De l'importance de comprendre comment on accède à l'information et de reprendre la main.

Stephen Dale's curator insight, January 13, 2014 5:58 AM

People who use Google are given the impression that they are interacting with the data out there, but they are actually interacting with Google and its view of the world.

"They are prediction engines that constantly refine a theory about who you are and what you are going to do or want next. Together, they create an universe of data for each one of us."

"In a 2010 paper published in the Scientific American journal, Tim Berners-Lee warned about companies developing ever more “closed” products and “data islands”.

"Morville, in his book Search Patterns, says that the first and second results receive 80% of attention. The vertical approach suggests to the user the idea of a single result that fully answers the question, enclosing possibilities and preventing alternative realization."

Or in other words, is our acceptance of what we see in search results eroding our ability (or willingness) to consider alternatives and employ critical thinking?

Mrs. Dilling's curator insight, February 13, 2014 11:52 AM

My favorite statement, "we must always be aware and well informed about the intentions of companies, and never stop having multiple options for any service."

This article was an eye opener for me. I had never questioned Google before.

'Layering' Is The New SEO

'Layering' Is The New SEO | Latest Social Media News | Scoop.it
Search Engine Optimization or SEO is no longer what it was a couple of years back. Now, an SEO specialist needs to widen his skill-set to survive in his profession, and shift towards Search Marketing Integration or SMI.

Via Martin (Marty) Smith
Martin (Marty) Smith's curator insight, December 30, 2013 11:24 PM

Have you noticed a trend toward calling everything the "new SEO"? I'm guilty too with my Storytelling Is The New SEO deck on Slideshare (http://www.slideshare.net/martinmartysmith/storytelling-new-seo ). We are wrestling with what the absence of so much busy work creates.

I agree with this well written statement about the "new SEO":

"Search Marketing Integration merges the world of marketing with keyword themes and link building to get soaring organic visibility and better ROI. SMI is all about effective use of cross-departmental initiatives. In short, success in an SEO campaign will no longer come from the irrelevant and redundant tactics. The caliber to integrate SEO with the marketing initiatives (branding, press releases, events, products, etc.) of an organization will measure true SEO success."

Not sure about the "soaring" part, but I know any website I manage makes more money with a Phil Buckley or a Bill Ross along for discussions about "blue oceans", keywords and content.

Phil never loved the busywork anyway. Now he, and his fellow SEO experts have more time for thinking BIG PICTURE and helping to create content strategies, new Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), strategies and tactics that can WIN and WIN FAST in this new "social shares rule all" post SEO Is Dead world.

Agnipravo Sengupta's comment, January 1, 2014 12:38 AM
I read an interview of Rand Fishkin where he pointed out that SEO should not remain as an independent sector. It should play a greater role by taking active part in every other sectors of an organization and act as a "layer" over them.

How Netflix + Roku Is Changing Content Curation In Competitors Beware Ways.

Martin (Marty) Smith's curator insight, December 26, 2013 3:35 PM

Netflix + Roku is changing content curation. By making content a flexible layer of presentation a small number of titles feels infinite, relevance and User Generated Content goes up along with profits while costs go down. Amazon.com and very content curator and Internet marketer could learn a thing or two from Netflix + Roku.
