Internet safety has also disappeared entirely from the proposals for the over 14 group. Although it has long been a problem that internet safety and responsible digital use has been taught only in secondary schools, this is a curious and disturbing reversal. Now the proposal is to teach it only in primary schools. Ask any secondary school if they experience problems with their pupils’ use of internet, phones, social networking etc., and you will receive a resounding yes.

Do We Need Social Media Education in Schools Now?

Do We Need Social Media Education in Schools Now? | Latest Social Media News | Scoop.it
Is it time for social media education in our schools? The recent Manti Te'o hoax is only the tip of the iceberg. He knew how to use social media, but didn’t understand its power.

There is an urgent need to educate students at all levels on the responsible use of social media. It’s time to help students navigate this unfiltered world of anonymous faces. When searching for a curriculum for social media education.

Teaching students how to set their privacy levels on applications is only the starting line, not the finish line.

Chadvice - Sex and Violence in Digital Media. Prevention, Help & Couselling | Latest Social Media News | Scoop.it
Ch@dvice is a Belgian-Austrian project which focuses on online chat as a means of state-of-the-art primary help for minor victims of sexual abuse.

One of the outcomes of the project is the handbook for educators “Sex and Violence in Digital Media. Prevention, Help & Couselling”, produced by the Austrian Institute for Applied Telecommunications (OIAT).  The handbook contains useful information on media violence and phenomena such as cyber-bullying, sexting and grooming.

The resource is primarily meant to be used by teachers, therefore it contains tips on prevention but also how to handle such incidents at school. It also touches the topic of assistance for victims, with a special focus on online assistance. It contains a list of helplines operating in the European network under the Safer Internet Programme of the European Commission. The resource is complemented with 23 practical exercises that can be used in school or in youth work.

Since the handbook has been created in the framework of a EU Daphne III project in cooperation with partners from Belgium, ===>  it is available in 4 language versions: English, German, French and Dutch. <===

New Laws: Is it Really Up to the Government to Protect Your Kid Online?

New Laws: Is it Really Up to the Government to Protect Your Kid Online? | Latest Social Media News | Scoop.it

A focus on child safety is among the top state laws taking effect at the start of 2013. In many states, new laws take effect on Jan. 1, 2013

Now It’s Your Turn

With all this new legislation, it should be a reminder that if the government is concerned about the safety of your kids online, you should be concerned too.

===> It is ultimately the parents’ responsibility to protect their children both off line and online. <===

Breanne Hemann's comment, April 12, 2014 10:12 PM
I agree that some measures are needed to protect children from the harms that can come with the internet. However, I do believe there is only so much that the government can do before it begins to affect citizens freedom. How will these new laws affect internet users? Will it be a positive move on the governments part?
Lauren Heim's curator insight, May 7, 2014 10:58 PM

I think this is a good and bad idea. I think it's by far an invasion of privacy but i also believe that it will save a lot of lives and that overrules invasion of privacy. So it's probably not a bad idea considering cyber bullying has only gotten worse.

Abigail Beinborn's comment, May 8, 2014 1:28 PM
I agree that this is a good idea for the government to keep children safe on the internet. People are becoming more violent and violating a lot of people's personal business on the internet. I believe that the internet is becoming more unsafe.

E-Safety – the role for educators

E-Safety – the role for educators | Latest Social Media News | Scoop.it

The Network Information Security in Education, 2012 report by the European Network and Information Security Agency outlines the role educators can play in teaching positive and responsible online behaviour to students.

The report stresses the importance of not making assumptions about children’s knowledge on e-Safety issues due to the many misconceptions which exist about appropriate use of the Internet. Issues which educators are likely to be aware of, such as keeping passwords secure and not downloading copyright material, may be viewed quite differently by students. Many teenagers share passwords with each other as a sign of true friendship and many see internet content as public property and download music, videos and images without a thought of the legal issues of copyright.

The report sets out ways educators can help children use technology wisely and safely:

Back to School Online Safety Guide : Yoursphere for Parents

Back to School Online Safety Guide : Yoursphere for Parents | Latest Social Media News | Scoop.it

The back-to-school season is responsible for billions of dollars spent on digital devices; laptops, tablets and smartphones are changing the way our children learn, and subsequently, the way they interact with the world around them. Unfortunately, many children fall victim to the negative aspects of technology: cyberbullying, sexting and online predation. While certainly all children won’t encounter these issues, it certainly doesn’t mean they don’t exist, and it isn’t an excuse for you not to be aware. In today’s digitally connected world, one of the best things we can offer our child is our parental, involvement, education and vigilance. While you certainly don’t have to stay ahead of your kids when it comes to knowing about the coolest photo app, it is critically important that you know when they start using it; you have a safety plan in place, and you know what to talk to your kids about as well as have insured that all their digital devices are safety enabled.
